Every vehicle owner knows the pain of having arms filled with bags of groceries as you walk through a store parking lot, only to get to your car and remember that you’ve left your keys on your pocket. You suddenly have to either find a way to rearrange everything without dropping those bags, or sit everything down in a dirty parking lot – both of which are less than ideal.

What Is the Smart Entry System?

Toyota’s advanced Smart Entry System allows you to perform many of the normal functions of operating a car – from locking and unlocking the doors to starting the engine – just by carrying the key somewhere on your body and not necessarily in your hand. The system uses wireless technology to “recognize” when both the key and the vehicle are within close proximity to one another. So long as the key is without about 2.3 feet of either the front or back door handles, you can do all of the following:

Lock and unlock the vehicle front doors.
Lock and unlock the vehicle back doors.
Start your car’s engine and go for a drive.

If the key was in your pocket and you wanted to unlock the driver’s side door, for example, all you have to do is grip the door handle. The sensor on the handle itself will detect the key, whether it’s in your pocket or your nearby hand bag, and the car will take care of the rest.

When the key is detected as being inside the vehicle, your engine can be started in just a couple of seconds. All you have to do is press the break and the “Start/Stop” button on the console and the engine will fire right up.

Also included is a safety system that makes it impossible to lock your car with your keys inside. If you happen to forget your key inside and you try to press the “Lock” button on your door’s handle, an alert will automatically notify you that the key is still inside the car. You won’t be able to lock your doors until you retrieve it. This is just one less thing that you have to worry about and an additional layer of convenience that only comes with owning a Toyota.
