Knoxville, TN

Knoxville is one of Tennessee’s undiscovered treasures, if only because visitors seem to pay more attention to Nashville than the other fun ‘ville in town. In addition to stunning landscapes, Knoxville is home to a wealth of fun, family-friendly activities that take place indoors, meaning that they’re available to keep the kiddos occupied rain or shine. The only thing better than a family vacation is a fun-filled holiday that includes engaging, exciting activities for every member of the family.

Take in The Muse Knoxville

With a name like that, how could you resist a trip? The Muse Knoxville was once the Discovery Center, and the vibe is still largely the same. As museums go, it’s exceedingly kid-friendly, chock full of hands-on learning activities and fun programs. Thousands of square feet provide plenty of room to roam around, building cars, playing with tiles, exploring science exhibits, experimenting with microscopes, and playing in wind tunnels. Even mom and dad are sure to have a rousing time.

Women's Basketball Hall of Fame

Marvel at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

Bringing some sports enthusiasts on vacation? The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is a place every basketball fan should visit at least once. Inside, the glass staircase looks like an enormous basketball net, topped by an even more massive, 10-ton, 30-foot-tall basketball. Right away, you know you’re in for a good time. The hall houses interactive exhibits that follow the history of basketball in general and the WNBA in particular. You can even brush up on your basketball skills!

James White Fort

Go on a Historical Road Trip

Once upon a time, Knoxville was a frontier town. Its rich history is still on display in many places, most notably in the form of six old, very unique homes that range from quaint log cabins to decadent mansions. Pack the kids in the car and visit fine old homes, such as Blount Mansion, William Blount’s former home, where you can learn a little something about the Constitution. James White’s Fort is another must-see, along with Marble Springs, Crescent Bend, the Ramsey House, and the Mabry-Hazen house.

Visit the Museum of East Tennessee History

East Tennessee itself has a varied and interesting history, which is fully traced within the walls of the Museum of East Tennessee History. During your visit, you can learn about the history of the area from the 1700s to modern day. Take a guided tour to view a documentary and participate in interactive exhibits.

You and the kids will learn about the Trail of Tears, the Civil War, and the Underground Railroad, as well as Davy Crockett and Bonnie Kate Sevier. Among the many artifacts on display, you’ll find old textiles and quilts, furniture, rustic art, and items dating back to the Civil War.

When you take the kids on vacation, you always want to make sure they have something to do and that there are activities you can enjoy as a family. Knoxville is a unique city, in that it offers fun activities all through the year, whether you’re exploring the area from your car or taking in the city’s many museums and activity centers.
